  • WORLD Channel, public media’s premiere platform for diverse voices, has received its first-ever IDA Documentary Award. Monica Land’s revolutionary Fannie Lou Hamer's America: An America ReFramed Special. a co-production by WORLD Channel, American Documentary and Black Public Media in partnership with PBS won the “Best TV Feature Documentary or Mini-Series” award, announced over the weekend by the International Documentary Association at the 38th IDA Awards ceremony held at the Paramount Theater in Los Angeles on Saturday, December 10, 2022.
  • The PBS science series NOVA today announced a new one-hour film, BEFORE THE ICE (w.t.), produced by HHMI Tangled Bank Studios and Handful of Films for GBH, that will present an unprecedented, detailed portrait of the high Arctic two million years ago–made possible by a revolutionary breakthrough in ancient DNA science. The groundbreaking discovery is the subject of a paper published as the cover article in the December 7 issue of Nature, reporting the recovery and sequencing of more than 100 plant and animal genera contained in sediment from Northern Greenland dating to at least 2 million years ago. This breakthrough is around one million years older than any DNA sample previously recovered. The documentary is currently in production and slated to premiere in early 2024 on PBS.
  • GBH is helping Massachusetts music fans get into the festive spirit with A Holiday Celebration, a live concert showcasing seasonal selections with a cast of renowned classical, jazz and Celtic musicians in GBH’s acclaimed Fraser Performance Studio on Thursday, December 15. The program will feature the Boston Children’s Chorus; tenor Lawrence Brownlee; Renaissance Men; pianist Jacqueline Schwab; and The Charles Overton Group. The event will be hosted by CRB afternoon host Greg Ferrisi. In addition to the in-person experience, the performance can be streamed virtually for free with an RSVP.
  • Susan Goldberg, a media executive and leader of technological and cultural transformation, will be the next President and CEO of GBH. She is the first woman to hold this role since GBH was founded in 1951.
  • High School Quiz Show®, GBH’s televised academic tournament for Massachusetts high schools, has revealed the 17 teams that will compete for the Season 14 State Championship title. The qualifying schools received the highest scores at High School Quiz Show’s Super Sunday event on November 6, where 65 schools from across the Commonwealth took a written quiz at GBH’s studios in Brighton. On the bracket are four first–time competitors as well as defending Season 13 champion, North Quincy High School.
  • Following 50 years in the news industry, GBH News Politics Editor Peter Kadzis will retire from full-time work in January 2023. He will continue to work with GBH News as a political contributor.
  • NOVA, the PBS science documentary series produced by Boston public media producer GBH, has been honored with a 2022 AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Award. Producer/Director Bella Falk and Co-Director David Dugan received the AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Silver Award in the Video In-Depth Reporting category for their work on NOVA’s Ice Age Footprints, which explores how ancient footprints provide new evidence of humans and extinct giant beasts of the Ice Age. The awards, administered by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), recognize distinguished worldwide science reporting for a general audience.

  • Renowned Massachusetts-based meteorologist David Epstein will bring his signature weather forecasts to GBH News beginning Monday, June 6, 2022. A new partnership between GBH News and the popular meteorologist will bring daily weather forecasts to GBH News listeners on weekdays during Morning Edition (6-10 am, 89.7FM). In addition, Epstein will join Morning Edition co-hosts Paris Alston and Jeremy Siegel for weekly discussions about trends in the weather and related issues like the impact of climate change on New England. Epstein will also provide breaking news weather updates throughout the day during snowstorms and severe weather events.
  • GBH News has won seven regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, including the Overall Excellence award for the third consecutive year.   • North Quincy High School has earned the title of High School Quiz Show® State Champion after an impressive run on Boston public media producer GBH’s academic quiz show’s 13th season. In an exhilarating championship showdown, North Quincy took on Andover High School in the season finale, which aired on May 21, 2022. North Quincy defeated Andover with a final score of 1120 to 980.

  • BOSTON, May 17, 2022 - GBH Kids and The Magic House today announced the opening of “Molly of Denali: An Alaskan Adventure,” an interactive traveling exhibit and life-size replica of the fictional village of Qyah, from the award-winning PBS KIDS animated series MOLLY OF DENALI®. Debuting in St. Louis to coincide with the opening of the Association of Children’s Museum’s annual conference, it’s an opportunity for children’s museums across the United States to bring the exhibit to their local community, offering children the chance to experience life in an Alaska Native village right in their own backyards.

  • GBH Kids and PBS KIDS today announced the launch of Search It Up: The Game, now available through Ruff Ruffman on pbskids.org. Based on the award-winning digital miniseries Search It Up, the game is designed to help kids ages 4-7 learn to safely navigate technology and the internet.
  • The Board of Trustees for Boston public media producer GBH has elected Stacy L. Cowan, Susan G. Fentin, Susan X. Luo, and Lynn Perry Wooten as trustees. The Board elected Cowan and Luo at the March 2, 2022 meeting, while Fentin and Wooten were elected at the October 2021 Board meeting.

  • BOSTON (February 22, 2022) – Boston public media producer GBH has awarded five fellowships to early-career writers who will bring diverse viewpoints and BIPOC representation to Work It Out Wombats!, a new animated GBH Kids series for PBS. The GBH Kids Scriptwriting Fellowship aims to diversify the pipeline of writers for both the series and the greater children’s media industry by providing early-career writers, who are members of underrepresented groups, with hands-on learning experience in television writing for children.

Seventeen Massachusetts high schools will go head-to-head in pursuit of the State Championship trophy. Emmy Award-winning radio personality Billy Costa will return to host the fast-paced tournament as teams of four square off in categories including math, history, science, literature, civics and current events. The new season of High School Quiz Show will premiere with the Wild Card match on Saturday, February 5 at 6pm ET on GBH 2 and on High School Quiz Show’s YouTube channel. New episodes air weekly through May 21.

  • New hire joins growing leadership team at GBH News
  • BOSTON (December 20, 2021) – Boston public media producer GBH has awarded four fellowships to innovative staff and independent producers, recognizing excellence, potential and creativity. The recipients of the 2022 Fellowship Awards are Jackie Bruleigh and Nicole Velez, who received the Becton Fellowship; Daniel Ofman, who received the Margret and Hans Rey/Curious George Producership; and Jamila Ephron, recipient of the Peter S. McGhee Fellowship.
  • Boston (December 3, 2021) - Today, GBH presents Holiday Music and Musings, a celebration of local talent during the month of December, bringing back free, in-person events to GBH’s Boston Public Library Studio. The series kicks off with a holiday performance by Jamaica Plain’s Sheffield Chamber Players and concludes with a Christmas country music set performed by local country star Ayla Brown on Thursday, December 16.
  • BOSTON (December 2, 2021) – GBH News today announced the launch of Talking Politics, a new weekly show that will take a deep dive into local politics, with a special focus on the 2022 Massachusetts gubernatorial race. Hosted by GBH News politics reporter Adam Reilly, the panel-based series will feature conversations with local political newsmakers, influencers, analysts and activists. GBH News City Hall reporter Saraya Wintersmith, Statehouse Bureau reporter Mike Deehan and politics editor Peter Kadzis will also be key contributors.   • BOSTON (November 15, 2021) – Public media organizations GBH and PRX announced today the appointment of Dan Lothian as executive producer of The World, public radio’s longest-running daily global news program. Lothian assumes the role of executive producer after serving as interim executive producer since March 2021.

  • BOSTON – (July 29, 2021) Boston public media producer GBH has been honored with 24 nominations for the 42nd Annual Emmy® Awards by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). FRONTLINE, GBH’s investigative journalism series, earned 19 News and Documentary nominations for films that examine critical domestic and international issues — from investigating COVID-19’s devastation, to Amazon’s rise and reign, to the growing threats of conspiracy theories in American politics and the Taliban’s power abroad. NOVA, the most-watched primetime science series on American television, earned four News and Documentary nominations for Nature’s Fear Factor, which spotlights the role of predators in wildlife recovery and Human Nature, which explores the ethics of gene editing technology. In addition, ANTIQUES ROADSHOW received its 19th Primetime Emmy Award nomination in the category of Outstanding Structured Reality Program.

  • BOSTON (July 14, 2021) - GBH Kids, the premiere home in public media for children, today announced a new development deal with New York Times bestselling author and Newbery Medalist Kwame Alexander to create and produce a multiplatform project, including a television series based on his first children’s book Acoustic Rooster and his Barnyard Band. Veteran competitor Belmont took on two-time defending champions Boston Latin School in a tight match, ultimately coming out ahead with a final score of 1070 to 1060 points in the season finale which premiered Saturday, June 19, 2021.

  • BOSTON (May 6, 2021) – GBH News has won six Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, including the Overall Excellence award for the second year in a row. The public media outlet is the first recipient of the new Excellence in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion award, and also was recognized in the categories of Feature Reporting TV, Sports Reporting, Investigative Reporting and Excellence in Sound.
  • BOSTON (April 15, 2021) – Boston public media producer GBH and JazzBoston are teaming up to celebrate International Jazz Day. GBH’s Eric Jackson will host JazzNOW: No Borders, a free live virtual performance on Friday, April 30 at 8 pm. Live from the acoustically acclaimed GBH Fraser Performance Studio, the event will feature the Jazz World Trio, a group of three international artists each with a strong Boston tie. The video performance streams to the GBH website.
  • BOSTON (April 6, 2021) – Boston public media producer GBH has announced a partnership with classical music streaming service IDAGIO on a new concert series to bring classical music performances into the homes of listeners. Over the next several months, GBH and IDAGIO will bring listeners a series of five compelling video concerts featuring celebrated classical musicians performing in GBH’s Fraser Performance Studio. The concerts will be streamed to IDAGIO’s Global Concert Hall audience.
  • BOSTON, MA, April 6, 2021 – PBS KIDS and GBH Boston today announced that the award-winning animated series MOLLY OF DENALI will return for a second season in Fall 2021. Following its premiere in 2019, MOLLY OF DENALI received critical acclaim, including a Peabody Award, a Television Critics Association Award and a Kidscreen Award. In its first year, MOLLY OF DENALI reached more than 42 million people1 on-air on PBS KIDS and the PBS KIDS digital platforms have over 450K users each month.2
  • BOSTON (March 31, 2021) – The American Archive of Public Broadcasting (AAPB) has released a new online exhibit – Freedom Song: Interviews from Eyes on the Prize: America’s Civil Rights Years, 1954–1965 – that explores the history behind and making of the groundbreaking civil rights series Eyes on the Prize. Using unedited interviews recorded for the series, as well as an interactive map of locations central to the civil rights movement and a timeline of critical events, the Freedom Song exhibit breathes new life and context into the epic series produced by filmmaker Henry Hampton’s Blackside Inc., which premiered on PBS in 1987. The exhibit was curated by Michelle Kelley, Ph.D., a cinema studies scholar who worked with students on the Eyes on the Prize interviews as a postdoctoral teaching fellow at Washington University in St. Louis.
  • Boston, MA (March 25, 2021) – WORLD Channel, a national public media broadcast, online and social media platform with news and documentaries humanizing complex issues from across the globe, is teaming up with PBS to bring back Eyes on the Prize, the iconic history series on race in America. The 14-part series will begin airing Sunday, April 4, 2021 at 9 p.m. ET, on WORLD Channel, and will be available to PBS member stations nationwide beginning April 10, 2021 (check local listings).
  • BOSTON (March 23, 2021) – High School Quiz Show®, GBH’s award-winning televised academic competition for Massachusetts high school students, will premiere its 12th season at 6 p.m. on April 3 on GBH 2 and on the show’s web page and YouTube channel. Award-winning Boston media personality Billy Costa returns to host as 17 teams vie for the state championship. The show was produced using a new, innovative hybrid model with students competing remotely and Costa hosting from GBH studios in Boston.

  • BOSTON – (February 11, 2021) For the third time, Boston public media producer GBH has been honored with three 2021 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Awards for outstanding journalism. The 2021 awards recognized FRONTLINE’s For Sama, a gripping, first-person account of one woman’s experience of the Syrian conflict; NOVA’s Decoding COVID-19, a scientific investigation into the coronavirus pandemic in its early weeks; and AMERICAN EXPERIENCE’s Chasing the Moon, a look back on the race to land a man on the moon.
  • BOSTON – (February 11, 2021) Boston public media producer GBH has been recognized with two 2021 Kidscreen Awards, honoring Molly of Denali in the inaugural “Best Inclusivity” category and Scribbles and Ink in the “Best Alternative Game” category.
  • BOSTON (February 1, 2021) – High School Quiz Show revealed today the competition bracket for Season 12 of the popular academic series from Boston public media producer GBH. Following the program’s first-ever virtual Super Sunday qualifying quiz on January 24, seventeen high school teams from across Massachusetts advanced to the televised competition. In a season of firsts, High School Quiz Show is also welcoming four new teams, including the first team of homeschooled students in the show’s history. The two-time defending champion Boston Latin School, as well as four other former champions, also will be competing.
  • BOSTON, MA. February 1, 2021 – A new survey of teachers during the pandemic shows that they need new and greater professional development and support, as well as instructional tools and student-facing resources in order to be successful during remote learning. Surveying more than 1,900 educators nationwide before and after the COVID-19-forced transition to remote schooling, GBH Education found significant differences in teachers' confidence in using digital media resources and critical inequities in access to digital media among students, especially among those in public schools, rural areas, and Title 1 schools. The results underscore a need for greater training support for educators and a stronger commitment to providing access to equipment and internet for students who need it.
  • BOSTON (January 29, 2021) – Boston public media producer GBH was recognized this week with two Public Media Awards for its commitment to impactful youth media in 2020 for the productions of High School Quiz Show and Search It Up!.
